So I’m sure you’ve heard it over and over again. YOU NEED A MENTOR! Well, let’s talk about that a bit more…
When we first began investing in real estate, we didn’t have a mentor. Our “mentors” were the numerous authors of the books we were reading, and the speakers of the podcasts we were listening to. We didn’t have someone we could actually call and ask questions to for guidance.
Even without a mentor, we were still able to have some success in our choice of business, which is real estate investing. We did make some mistakes, but we didn’t allow that to stop us. We continued to push through and believed it would get better.
When we did get a mentor, I will definitely tell you things did change. At the time we had only done 5 real estate transactions, and they were challenging. Once we started consulting with someone that had years of experience in the business, it was definitely a game changer.
With a mentor, we were able to go from 5 deals in 3 years to 30 deals in the next 3 years. It was like, all of a sudden everything became much easier! What made such a big difference? KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND GUIDANCE.
Our mentor had been investing in real estate for over 30 years, and had seen and dealt with almost anything you can think of when it comes to real estate investing. Just being able to converse with them “at will” helped us to change our mindset.
There were numerous times where we were guided to go a different route than what we planned by our mentor, and that guidance helped us avoid a lot of stress and headaches. It didn’t feel good at the time, but that guidance definitely made things much smoother for us.
Now we’re not saying you need a mentor, but they will definitely speed up your progress. Will you still be able to be successful without a mentor? DEFINITELY! It will probably take you longer to get there, but you can still do it.
One thing that really impressed our mentor to work with us is that we already had successfully completed 5 transactions, and it was all without guidance. If someone sees that you’re putting forth an effort and trying to do something, they are more likely to want to help you.
In closing, getting a mentor is a personal choice. We believe it’s important to get started and at least try to have some success before reaching out to someone. A mentor can definitely be a game changer for you. Comment below and let us know what your thoughts are about a mentor.
